What is it about the NIV?

We are not allowed to quote from the NIV at college and today the preacher on my church-hop described it as the 'Not Inspired Version' and from the chuckling all around me, it seemed that a lot of people agreed with him. Obviously, there is a degree of hyperbole but I wonder why so many people feel this way. Any ideas?

Yep, we're advised that it's best not to do so. Why do you think my pastor yesterday referred to it as the 'Not inspired version?' Any ideas?

Rachel, I don't get either. The NIV has been referenced in more academic writings than any other English translation. Check out Sam's posting on which bible is the most authoritive one?

It is interesting, isn't it Robert. Now I can understand why the ESV might be labeled the 'Egalitarians shocked version' but not so convinced by such harsh declarations against the NIV, I was 'born again' in part, through my study of the NIV.

I must ask college how they feel about the TNIV.

hi Robert

I've read the link, hopefully accurately although there are lot of distractions at home at the moment - it's kids' bedtime.

He seems to rank authority where i would call it popularity. I want to discover a Bible which is the closest to the meaning of the original languages.

What are your top 5? It might differ between continents.
