Objections to the resurrection

Ha - thought that might get your attention. Nope, not liberal on that one - totally orthodox.

This is what I have to do for college. "How might you respond? Come to the seminar ready to make a brief but forceful statement of your response:The disciples stole Jesus' body from the tomb so that they were able to create the resurrection story."

What would your response be?

I'll post up mine tomorrow - it's a good exercise in apologetics.

1. The Roman guard would be punished (even executed) for dereliction of duty, so why didn't they say the body was stolen? (this is admittedly a bit of a circular argument)
2. The grave clothes were left in such as way to suggest resurrection not removal.
3. So they made up as story and were prepared to die a martyr's death to defend it? I don't think so!
4. They were all Jews and to touch a dead body would have been unthinkable, as it made them unclean. This reflects the projection of modern Western attitudes into the first century mindset. (I wonder whether we can link chronologically the popularity of this objection to the resurrection with 19th century "Burke & Hair" bodysnatching episodes?)

Interesting last point Tim - never thought about that one.

Thanks for the contribution.

Aren't blogs great for getting people to do your homework for you ;)

Your "objection" is 2,000 years too late:

Matthew 28:11While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened. 12When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, 13telling them, "You are to say, 'His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.' 14If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble." 15So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.

The truth is the Apostles had nothing to gain.
