John Coyne's sermon on being a passionate people - ST JOHN'S COLLEGE

Lord as we seek to hear what you have to say with expectancy
Still the business of our hearts so we might receive from thee

"'Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'"

Love from the center of who you are; don't fake it. Run for dear life from evil; hold on for dear life to good. Be good friends who love deeply; practice playing second fiddle. Don't burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don't quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy Christians; be inventive in hospitality. (Romans 12) (The Message)

Be a passionate people.

We are called to keep ourselves 'fueled and aflame'.

God calls us to be a passionate people. What is passion? 'I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you', Paul tells Timothy in his letter to him. We have faith but we need for the wind of the spirit to keep fanning the flames, we need to ask the spirit to relight the kindling so it might burst into flames.

We should have hearts that are passionate for God.

William Booth in his last speech before he was raised to glory said:
“While women weep, as they do now, I’ll fight. While children go hungry, as they do now, I’ll fight. While men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I’ll fight. While there is a drunkard left, while there is a poor girl upon the streets, while there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll fight. I’ll fight to the very end!”

John Wesley describes how in accepting God "I felt my heart strangely warmed." He toured the country on horseback continually preaching most days, up to five times a day.

Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord. Romans 12:11 (NIV)

Jesus asks one thing of the man who seeks wonders what he can do to be with God:" 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'

We were exhorted to become a people who energise and do not drain those around us, to be zealous and passionate in our work and studies.

More will come to me of his words, I'm sure ...
